Our Apple Orchards
Where the sea meets the apple trees, the flavour of Österlen is born
From the sun-lit slopes by Hanö Bay to the fertile soils of Solnäs Gård outside Lund, our apples are grown with care and patience. Each orchard has its own distinct character, shaped by climate, soil, and generations of experience. Together, they form the very heart of Kiviks Musteri’s apple craftsmanship.
Our Ambition
Our Orchards
Our ambition is to see more Swedish apples grown and enjoyed in Sweden, through continued work in cultivation, variety development, and research. To us, the apple symbolises everything we stand for and value — sustainability, health, history, and craftsmanship.
We grow apples in Kivik, in Torup just outside Kivik, and at Solnäs Gård in Fjelie, near Lund. Across these three orchards, we nurture around 200,000 apple trees. Being an apple grower is a craft: all work is done by hand — pruning, thinning, and harvesting — and always at the right time, to ensure optimal fruit quality and reduce waste. In recent harvests, we have picked approximately 2,000 tonnes of apples.
Old and New Orchards
Cultivation with Care
Our orchards are certified according to Integrated Production (IP, Svenskt Sigill). Most are modern plantations, but we also preserve older trees and traditional apple varieties to safeguard our cultural heritage.
At the same time, we look to the future. Together with partners such as the Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences and Lund University, we take part in research projects aimed at developing the sustainable apple orchards of tomorrow. By sharing knowledge and experience, we strive to contribute to a more sustainable food production for the future.
Proud Apple Growers
Our Orchards
Karakås
Our First Orchard
It was at Karakås Farm, just north of Kiviks Musteri, that it all began. Here, the very first seed of Kiviks Musteri was planted in 1888, when Henric Åkesson established what would become Sweden’s first commercial fruit orchard. To this day, we continue to grow apples here — some from our oldest trees.
Ljungkullen
Our Oldest Trees
Closest to the cidery lies our Ljungkullen orchard, home to our oldest apple trees. Here we grow, among other varieties, Gravenstein — a fine old, classic apple variety.
Svinaberga
A Location of Strength and Character
Our Svinaberga orchard is located high above the landscape, right next to Stenshuvud National Park, offering spectacular views. The microclimate here differs from that along Hanö Bay below. Winds are stronger, and summer temperatures are often a few degrees warmer. The soil is also heavier in clay and exceptionally fertile.
Hällekås
Björn Ranelid’s Orchard
Hällekås is an orchard owned by Björn Ranelid and leased by us. It is located next to the cidery, right by the sea. Like us, Björn shares a deep love for Österlen, the local landscape, and the apples grown here.
Olofsberg
A Unique Collection of Apple Varieties
Olofsberg is an apple orchard owned by the Grytzell family and leased by us. This orchard is home to a remarkable treasure of old and rare apple varieties, which we are proud to preserve and cultivate.
Solnäs Gård
Our Most Modern Orchard
Solnäs Gård is located on the plains between Lund and Bjärred. Apples have been grown here since the 1930s, and today Solnäs Gård is one of Sweden’s largest and most modern apple orchards. Thanks to a slightly warmer summer and autumn climate than in Österlen, the apples ripen earlier here. Most of the Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences’ research trials in fruit cultivation are conducted in these very orchards.
More Than Just Apples
Other Fruits and Berries
In both Kivik and at Solnäs Gård, we also grow pears. At our Svinaberga orchard, we additionally cultivate strawberries and gooseberries.
Our Finest
Apple Must and Cider from Selected Orchards
Some orchards benefit from particularly favourable terroir, where apples ripen under the best possible conditions. Factors such as soil, weather, and wind all leave their mark on the apples’ flavour. That is why we have created Our Finest — a range of apple must and cider made from carefully selected orchards.
